HiP Home Improvement provides mobile and flexible upgrades for residents living in extreme density such as Subdivided Units – often single-room homes occupied by multiple members of a household. Provisions emphasize the improvements of natural light and air ventilation, as well as health and hygiene supplies. HiP Improvements setup precedents for institutions and residents to flexibly upgrade extreme-density housing, which by necessity of access to work and public transportation, are often located in the urban centres.
Recognizing the urgent need to improve living conditions of the existing housing stock, the project will upgrade the quality of living spaces for at least 70 low-income households (or around 250 residents) in existing SDUs. Through the Online Community Platform (website) and the physical community centre, direct applications by families, and local social service NGO referrals, at least 70 families living in SDUs will be visited, developing design solutions through a Co-Design process, installation and construction, followed by follow-up service and evaluation.
